FR/ Ce long métrage issu d’une coproduction tchéco-slovaque est un thriller cynique situé en Slovaquie au cours d’une campagne présidentielle. Inspiré d’un roman écrit par Maros Hecko et Michal Havran, le film décrit la « création » d’un candidat à l’élection présidentielle à partir d’un parfait inconnu. La campagne électorale est perçue au travers des yeux et, surtout, des oreilles de deux espions, qui sont engagés pour écouter et enregistrer Adam Lambert, un magicien du monde de la publicité. Ils s’empêtrent dans un jeu de manipulation qui implique un groupe financier et un parti politique puissant.

EN/ This Slovak-Czech coproduction feature is a thriller, doused in cynical black humour, set in Slovakia, as we now know it, during a presidential campaign. Based on a novel written by Maros Hecko and Michal Havran, the film follows the manipulation behind producing a president of a country out of Mr. Nobody, a person no one has ever heard of. The campaign, and its intrigues, are closely tracked by the eyes and mainly ears of two snoops, who have been hired to tap and record Adam Lambert, a conjurer and a true master of the local advertising world. They get entangled in a manipulatory game run by a powerful financial and political group.

‘The Candidate’ is a witty political farce depicting not only dirty political and marketing practices but also the reality of a post-communist society transformed into a money-ruled, unscrupulous and individualistic society. You are not the one, who chooses the head of your country!
