Unmute Power Abuse - La lutte contre les violences sexuelles et les discriminations dans les arts de la scène : présentation de trois structures internationales de référence

Following the request of choreographic artists, the TROIS C-L and neimënster have joined forces with the THEATER FEDERATIOUN to organize a first conference on the fight against sexual violence and discrimination in the performing arts for the dance, theater, and performance sectors. This conference will present 3 international structures created by, and for, artists which are places of information, listening, advice and awareness.

This two-part conference will begin with a presentation of the associations, their missions, and their actions: Whistle (US), ENGAGEMENT (BE) & SFA (FR). An open discussion with the public and a coffee, in the second part, will allow everyone to get information, to understand the workings and the means available to artists thanks to these associations, and to exchange on the importance of creating “safe spaces”.

Dive a little deeper into the subject of the conference and discover the awareness documents made in different countries around the abuse of power:

Whistle is a platform co-directed by dancer/choreographer Frances Chiaverini and writer/activist Robyn Doty that promotes dialogue around harassment, discrimination and violence against women. She actively includes transgender, queer, racialized and disabled people when working in the performing arts, dance and performance.
Whistle actively advocates for safe and responsible work practices
through open discussions, workshops, consultations, an anonymous record of testimony and creative works.
Robyn Doty is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and activist. She has worked with Valentina Kneževic, Frances Chiaverini, Roderick George, Katja Cheraneva and Nadine Fraczkowski among others. She holds an MA from Goethe University Frankfurt in English Literature, Culture and Media (2019). Currently, she lives in Brooklyn and is working as a writer and dramaturg on Roderick George’s upcoming dance works.

The movement behind Engagement was formed in the wake of #MeToo (2017) following the countless cases of sexual harassment revealed within Belgian Dance. Engagement has since developed as an active platform for all artistic disciplines, both in the professional and art education spheres.
As a peer-driven initiative, Engagement provides support to individuals and communities confronted with the damaging repercussions of transgressive behaviour, discrimination and/or abusive practices in the arts. It is also in dialogue with organizations that want to create a safer and more inclusive work environment.
Engagement also played an active role in the anti-harassment action launched in 2018 by the Flemish Community Department of Culture, Youth and Media.
Sexual harassment and gender-based violence through an intersectional feminist approach are at the heart of the topics the platform deals with. Engagement stands in solidarity with all those who fight against sexism, racism, discrimination of physical ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

Anna Muchin is a French-Greek singer-songwriter, musician and translator living in Brussels. Since 2017 she is an active member of the Engagement Arts movement which fights against sexism, sexual violence, harassment and abuse of power in the artistic milieu in Belgium and internationally.

The Syndicat français des artistes interprètes (SFA) is the professional union for dramatic, choreographic, lyrical, variety and circus artists, puppeteers and traditional artists. It is affiliated with the CGT Entertainment Federation (FNSAC) and the International Federation of Actors (FIA).
Its primary function is to defend the professional interests of its members, both individually and collectively. Beyond that, because of its recognized representativeness and its history, it also defends “the profession” and all professional performers working in the country.

To accomplish these missions, the SFA informs all artists of their rights and of the texts that govern the exercise of their professions, and actively defends its members in the event of litigation thanks to its efficient legal service and targeted interventions when necessary.
As a union confederated to the CGT, it is considered representative on a national level which gives it the legitimacy and responsibility to participate actively in professional and social negotiations and consultations that advance the status of all performers.

Tristan Ihne is a dancer, SFA union delegate at the CCN Ballet de Lorraine and member of the SFA National Council. Born in Geneva, he trained in classical dance at the Geneva Dance Center and was hired in 2005 at the Ballet de l’Opéra de Bordeaux. Two years later, he joined the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine. In parallel to his career as a dancer, Tristan Ihne is interested in music and also turns to production and deejaying.
