Jalsa | Indian Resonances - Sangeeta Shankar & daughters et Queens of Melody

The cultural diversity and creativity of India, this country-continent of a thousand faces, is reflected in its myriad of artistic expressions. The JALSA festival proposes to discover some of its greatest musical traditions by giving a place of choice to Indian artists of the new generation. It also showcases collaborative projects between these performers and musicians based in Europe. The term “JALSA” means the gathering and the joy of reunion: it is here the creativity born from the confrontation and the dialogue between several artistic universes and sensibilities that will be celebrated. Sometimes introspective and poetic, sometimes luminous and virtuoso, these musical encounters are an invitation to travel.

From an early age, Sangeeta Shankar and her two daughters, Ragini and Nandini, were introduced to the subtleties of Hindustani music by their mother and grandmother, the famous violinist N. Rajam. Like her, their playing style imitates the inflection of the singing voice, with a bowing technique that allows for the realization of the intonation nuances characteristic of Hindustani vocal forms, especially khayal singing.
Soloists in their own right, the three violinists are involved in a variety of musical projects. They meet on stage to the delight of music lovers. They alternate virtuosity and lyrical passages in mutual listening and appreciation where the complicity and the pleasure of playing together spring from the spontaneously improvised questions and answers in the melodic framework of the raga and the rhythmic framework of the tala. This family trio of two generations of women instrumentalists is an exception in the world of Hindustani music.

The French artist Éléonore Fourniau sings the joys and sorrows of the Kurdish people with a rare sensitivity, accompanying herself on the saz and the hurdy-gurdy. The Indian violinist NandiniShankar interprets the ragas of Hindustani music with subtlety and virtuosity. In this 2019 creation [inChorus], Eléonore Fourniau and Nandini Shankar take us on a musical journey that combines the sung heritage of the vast lands of Kurdistan with the Hindustani ragas of the plains and cities of North India. “Queens of Melody” is an invitation to immerse oneself in the captivating and timeless melodies of these Asian lands. The string playing of the two musicians responds and intertwines, with grace, in obvious complicity, with the rhythmic flow of the talented Amaan Ali whose brilliant style is revealed in each tabla solo. This is a new creation in Europe!
