Forme et couleur - Restitution Alvaro Marzan Diaz
“Forme et couleur” is a pictorial and sculptural installation developed during a creative residency at neimënster. It was born from the premise of the dialogue of the artistic work with the rich architectural and landscape heritage of the abbey, be it its vast public spaces or the Alzette river at the foot of the cliffs and the ancient walls of the city. These emblematic elements of Luxembourg culture serve as both inspiration and scenario for the installation. By transforming the known space with this installation, a new look is hoped for that underlines these values.
“One of the objectives of this residency was to leave my usual practice of painting to develop sculptural pieces. I start from painting and enter into sculpture, using canvases for oil painting, giving them volume and color and transporting the images of my painting into a three-dimensional space. This exercise allows me to act in a totally different way and to establish a more direct relationship with the space I occupy with my pieces. At the same time, the project is diversifying and looking for collaborations in other fields, especially in the audiovisual field, with a sound artist, a photographer and a video artist. Their work is not only a means of documentation, but an additional dimension to add to the artistic experience.”
The result is a set of sculptural pieces that inhabit and communicate with the space of the abbey and its surroundings, seeking to enhance these singular places. These pieces are designed to produce a strong contrast with their environment through two fundamental qualities, form and color. Their abstract forms escape the familiarity of the known, develop the expressive power of color and put us in touch with the mysterious and at the same time playful side of the reality we inhabit.
