An evening with Uwe Timm - „Der Verrückte in den Dünen“ und „Morenga“

Uwe Timm, one of the most important authors of contemporary German-language literature, most recently published “Der Verrückte in den Dünen” (2020), a volume of essays that explores the connection between literature and utopia. It proceeds historically, socially, and personally, in the dense, experiential, and at the same time reflective, knowledgeable form typical of Timm’s writing. What Timm holds here, that there is the potential for concrete utopia in reality as in literature, has also been demonstrated by the fate of some of his own books. Timm’s second novel “Morenga” (1978, presented in a new edition by dtv in 2020, with an afterword by Robert Habeck) is of unbroken topicality and effectiveness. This is demonstrated not least by the recent agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Namibia. For “Morenga” was and remains the definitive German postcolonial novel about the genocide of the Nama and Herero in the German colony of Deusch-Südwest and has also influenced the negotiations about a form of reparations.

In conversation with Uwe Timm, Cologne literary scholar and author Christof Hamann and Timm’s longtime editor Martin Hielscher, program director for fiction at C.H.Beck, will present these two books by Timm, as well as the volume of essays “Wunschort und Widerstand” (Wallstein 2020), published on the occasion of Timm’s 80th birthday.
