A colônia luxemburguesa - A transmedia project by Dominique Santana
DEEP IN THE RAINFORESTS OF BRAZIL LIES AN IMMENSE STEEL EMPIRE, METICULOUSLY BUILT BY THE MYSTERIOUS COLÔNIA LUXEMBURGUESA.
One hundred years ago, the Luxembourg-based steel giant Arbed – now ArcelorMittal – inaugurated its Brazilian subsidiary, called Companhia Siderúrgica Belgo Mineira, in the heart of the state of Minas Gerais. at that time, the lack of skilled labor caused a massive movement of hundreds of Luxembourg migrants to Brazil to build a colossal steel plant surrounded by its industrial city, thus giving birth to the cradle of the Brazilian steel industry.
In her search for her own identity, Luxembourgish-Brazilian filmmaker and historian Dominique makes a prodigious discovery of João Monlevade, an unheard-of and strangely familiar tropical version of the industrial south of Luxembourg, where she grew up.
This stunning revelation leads her on a fascinating quest behind the curtains of the mythical stories of the Colônia luxemburguesa. what does this Colônia look like? Is it an exemplary success story of integration into Brazilian society – a success story?
